Tip of the Week

Organising Baby Clothes:

Baby or toddler clothes often come in outfits, matching top and bottom, maybe even a hat and socks. To easily keep these items together, fold them and put them in large zip-lock bags before putting them away. You will be able to easily see the outfit and the bags can be used over and over again.

Here is a small selection of the type of hints you will find in our database.

Remember, if you can’t find an answer in our database, you can ask a question in our Fun Forum, where other members are happy to share their advice.

  • To prevent creases when hanging linen from wire hangers, take a cardboard tube from a used up roll of paper towels and cut lengthwise. Then slip it over the wire hanger and apply tape where you cut the tube. Then you can rest your linens on the tube instead of the wire.

  • Stains in carpet can be a hassle to remove. Never rub a stain, just blot. Rubbing breaks down the fibers and spreads the stain. Remove most food stains with shaving cream. Spray on and resist the temptation to rub it in, then let it set for 15 minutes. Rinse with a vinegar and water solution.

  • If your car battery is flat and you do not have any jumper leads, try dropping aspirin into the dead car's battery. It will give you enough of a jump to start the car.

  • How to keep a cut Avocado fresh: place a cut and peeled onion (Spanish is best) into a sealed container with the cut avocado, it will keep for days and not discolour and not pick up the onion taste.

  • To keep cut pumpkin from rotting in the fridge, take the seeds out and sprinkle pepper over it.

  • If you find you have dye stains on your skin after putting a rinse through your hair, light a match and rub the black carbon residue on your skin, than wash off. It will remove the dye.

  • Spray clothes with hairspray prior to washing them to get paint stains (acrylic) out... a great idea for school uniforms!

  • Changing a light bulb that has broken leaving the stem in the socket can be dangerous. Cut a potato in half, put the potato over the broken stem, push and twist and out it will pop saving you cuts and allowing you to put in a fresh bulb.

  • Recycle egg cartons by using them as small pots to grow seedlings. When seedlings are ready to transplant, you can plant the lot, cardboard and all.

  • Use cooled down camomile tea to clean and soothe sore and infected eyes. Also great and safe to use on cats and dogs. It has a natural antiseptic.

  • To prevent candles dripping, chill them in the refrigerator for a few hours before lighting.

  • Fit the rose spout off a watering can to the end of your grey water hose. It helps distribute the water more effectively over the ground.
